May the 4th Be With You!

It’s Star Wars Day, stamp fans, and my inner Star Wars fanatic is rejoicing! On May 25, 1977, George Lucas’ first Star Wars film—Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope—was released. It quickly became an international phenomenon, and in the nearly 35 years since then, the intergalactic story has remained the most successful and popular epic adventure of all time.

A deceptively simple morality tale of good versus evil set across a fantastic galaxy of exotic planets and bizarre creatures, the box-office sensation made the phrase “May the Force be with you” and such characters as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader a part of American culture. The story of Luke Skywalker and a band of Rebels battling against Darth Vader and the forces of the Galactic Empire is loved by several generations of moviegoers, helped by the release of sequels The Empire Strikes Back in May 1980 and Return of the Jedi in May 1983, as well as the three prequels released more than 16 years after the film that started it all…a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

The Star Wars Saga souvenir sheet issued on the 30th anniversary of the film in 2007 features artwork by longtime Star Wars poster artist Drew Struzan. After conducting a public poll on which of the characters featured on the commemorative sheet would have the special recognition of being issued individually, Yoda was given his own pane, beating out Darth Vader by nearly 10,000 votes. Master Jedi and Luke Skywalker’s teacher, Yoda’s 800 years of wisdom and unrivaled insight into the Force—not to mention his unique manner of speech—have made him a fan favorite from the beginning.

In honor of this culturally significant (we can pretend!) day, we have a Star Wars-themed contest for you! Ten lucky winners will receive an official USPS program from the Yoda First Day of Issue ceremony for the special release pane held on October, 25, 2007. Here’s the question:

After the fall of the Republic in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, where does Yoda go into hiding?

Submit your answers to uspsstamps [at] gmail [dot] com and remember, spelling counts! The winners will be selected at random and notified by email. Deadline for entries is 12 p.m. EST tomorrow, Saturday, May 5. May the Force be with you!
